About La Salle Debain

This is a weblog I'm keeping about my work on Debian and any other useful Debian related info I come across. It is not meant to compete with other news sources like Debian Weekly News or Debian Planet. Mostly it is just a way for me to classify and remember all the random bits of information that I have floating around me. I thought maybe by using a blog it could be of some use to others too. Btw. "I" refers to Jaldhar H. Vyas, Debian developer for over 5 years. If you want to know more about me, my home page is here.

The name? Debain is a very common misspelling of Debian and la salle de bains means bathroom in French.

Sponsored another upload for Millis Miller. Here are the changes since the last upload.

Fixed the daemon to go into background
Place files in /usr/lib/cgi-bin directory (not /var/www)
Change depend to be on virtual package 'httpd'
Add /etc/iptotal.cfg to conffiles
Correct path specifiers in *.cgi and iptotal.cfg files
Correctly create subdirectories archive/ and images/
Correct homepage link
Separate cgi and html files
Fixed a missing depend for shared libs (${shlibs:Depends})

Top 5 things that aren't in Debian but should be

Dan Shearer started a thread in debian-devel about this topic. Here is my list.

Pine Although mutt is probably better, this mail reader solidly entrenched in my psyche so I can't switch now. The trouble is it is mildly non-free. Actually I think Debian is just being pedantic about it because the authors clearly allow the distribution of modified packages. But that's not what the text of their license says so out of Debian it stays. It's not too bad because I've made my own packages for woody and sid which you can get here.
Sun JDK Java Development Kit I don't much care for the Java programming language myself but a lot of software uses it nowadays and the free JDKs still have a lot of catching up to do. The Blackdown port is available in .deb format so again this isn't a huge inconvenience.
VMWare The VMWare virtual machine emulator works well with Debian but it has its own idiosyncratic install. A version in .deb format which worked well with kernel-package etc. would be very nice.
Gentoo This is the most innovative Linux distribution around these days but they seem to be slowly reinventing wheels that Debian dealt with a long time ago. (I'm talking about stable releases etc.) If the Gentoo founders had worked with Debian rather than going their own way, the Linux community as a whole would be better off.
Knoppix Not only is the Knoppix live CD a great way to introduce people to Linux, it also provides a fast and easy way to install Debian, It's not a totally smooth upgrade however and it doesn't work on the many other platforms Debian supports. If the developers of Knoppix (and the many spinoffs it has inspired.) worked more closely with us, perhaps one of the biggest irritations people have with Debian could be avoided.

Planet Debian and a new look for La Salle Debain

Scott Remnant has started Planet Debian to aggregate Debian related blogs. I've sent him an email to get La Salle Debain added there and hopefully wider scrutiny will shame me into keeping it more uptodate this year. I've updated the layout to use CSS and after about half an hour of figuring out how GIMP works, the site now has a logo. Do you like it?
